ABOUT THE ARTIST INSTRUCTOR

JOSEPHINE LANGBEHN

I am a Nebraska artist engaged in multiple disciplines. I am a visual artist, arts educator, and swing dance enthusiast. For the past 14 years I have taught in public schools but now I have taken the leap and am chasing my dreams and forging my own path. I am now a full-time artist educator. Giving me more time in my beautiful studio at Hot Shops Art Center creating artwork while still doing what I also love - teaching. In 2015 I was selected as the Nebraska Outstanding Art Educator of the Year by the Nebraska Art Teachers Association.

In my artwork I am moved by the memories and stories told through collected black and white photographs from the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Using the photos as a starting point, I paint portraits of people to piece together stories of past lifetimes and to connect to people in the present. Taking an image that has been cherished through the years or those discarded and forgotten, I paint the images on a larger scale giving the moment of reminiscence. The paintings become an opportunity for dialogue to listen to people's lived experiences.
